What to Do When You Lose a Crown

A dental crown is a cap that protects a damaged tooth. Done properly, a crown can last for several years, but it can become loose or even fall out. If this happens, contacting a dentist quickly can help save the tooth underneath, so it's worth knowing what to do in the moment.
What to do if a dental crown falls out
If your crown falls out, try not to panic. Keep the crown safe if you're able to retrieve it, rinse it and store it somewhere clean to bring with you to your dental appointment. If it's cracked or damaged, it's unlikely to be reattached, but it can still help your dentist work out what happened and what your best treatment options are.
Until you can get to a dentist, avoid sticky or chewy foods and try to chew on the other side of your mouth to protect the exposed tooth. You can buy temporary dental cement from a pharmacy which might be able to help protect the tooth in the meantime, but this should only be used as a short-term measure, not a replacement for seeing a dentist.
Why do dental crowns become loose?
A loose crown isn't always noticeable until it falls out, but there are a few common reasons why this can happen:
The crown wasn't fitted properly in the first place
The tooth underneath the crown has become decayed or infected
Teeth grinding or clenching that puts extra pressure on the crown
General wear and tear over time, particularly if the crown is old
Biting down on hard or sticky foods
Why is urgent dental care important for a lost crown?
Even if the crown comes out intact, the tooth structure underneath could be compromised. Without the crown to protect it, your gum and any remaining tooth are left exposed, which could lead to pain, sensitivity or infection if left untreated. Getting to a dentist quickly gives you the best chance of protecting the tooth and finding out whether the crown can be refitted or whether a replacement is needed.
How to maintain crowns
A little care can go a long way in helping your crown last. To look after your crown and the tooth underneath it:
Be careful with sticky or chewy foods, such as toffee, which can pull at the crown
Maintain good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing around the crown
See your dentist for routine check-ups, so any issues with the fit or the tooth underneath can be picked up early
