A root canal is a dental procedure used to remove infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth and seal it to preserve the natural tooth and prevent further infection. It's one of the most common ways dentists save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. If you've been told you need one, here are answers to seven of the most common questions patients ask.

Do I need a root canal treatment?

If you've been advised by a dentist that you need a root canal, it's because there's an infection inside your tooth. This usually happens when decay, a crack, or an old filling has allowed bacteria to reach the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. You'll most likely be experiencing pain, sensitivity or discomfort in the affected tooth, which is often what brings patients to the dentist in the first place.

Are there alternatives to a root canal?

Most dentists will always try to save your natural tooth wherever possible, so if a root canal has been recommended, removing the tooth through extraction generally isn't advised. Root canal treatment clears the infection while preserving the tooth's structure and function, and helps prevent the infection from spreading further. Extraction also comes with its own set of considerations, including the need to eventually replace the missing tooth, so saving the natural tooth is usually the preferred option where it's possible.

Is it painful to get a root canal?

While root canals are often described as one of the worst dental procedures, this is a common misconception. A root canal is a standard dental procedure that starts with a local anaesthetic, so you won't feel pain during the treatment itself. In fact, the pain many people associate with root canals usually comes from the infection, not the procedure used to treat it.

How long does a root canal treatment take?

The exact process can vary depending on the tooth and the extent of the infection, but it generally follows a similar process. Your dentist will first take an X-ray to assess the damage, then administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp, which is carefully removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned. Once clean, the space is filled and the opening is closed with a filling. In some cases, a crown may also be recommended following treatment to help protect the tooth.

What is the expected recovery time after a root canal?

Once the anaesthetic starts to wear off, you shouldn't be in pain, though you may still notice some mild discomfort or soreness around the treated area for a short time. It's important to keep your mouth clean during recovery, and to avoid hot drinks and food until the anaesthetic has fully worn off and you're no longer experiencing sensitivity.

How can I avoid needing further treatment?

Infections inside a tooth typically develop when there's a cavity or other damage that allows bacteria to reach the pulp.
